I didn't know much about it because I applied in the United States. Is it difficult to enter the internship of MsrA in China? I heard from my friends that most of them are graduate students and all of them are Tsinghua Yao class Daniel. I am also an undergraduate. I feel that my strength is far less than those great gods. In this way, will internship be very painful.. Any answers related to MsrA internship are welcome, thank you! Update on January 25, 2018: four years later, the researchers of MsrA in those years were all dug up to Jingdong etc, the headlines of Tang Kuangshi of Alibaba Tencent, the young friends of the rice group in those years graduated from doctor's degree, the start-up companies they joined in the early stage took large investments, the friends who went abroad bought Tesla, and the respondents quietly moved bricks in IBM research. The main answer in MsrA contact slowly less, recommend students to practice can only forward the establishment to friends of friends, so from today on the main answer does not accept the recommended MsrA internship question, sorry! Welcome to IBM for internship and work in North America! =============================================================== I must answer this question! I am now a senior undergraduate of Beihang University and have been practicing in MsrA for 8 months. Later, I will write about how I came to MsrA through various opportunities in two years ~ in detail=============================================================== sorry, everyone, this pit has been dragging on for a long time, and I've been busy with the application First of all, let's talk about my background. I won a weak provincial first prize in the high school informatics competition. I knelt my knees and didn't get into Beida. I went to Beihang and wanted to go abroad. ================I'm the dividing line between background and nonsense. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =. Two years ago, I went to the "21st century computing" seminar held by Microsoft in Tsinghua University. It was the first time for me to get in touch with the academic frontier. The "tomorrow star" internship project promotion card I got was put in my dormitory for a long time. At that time, I said on my blog that MsrA is absolutely a holy land for us to apply abroad. If we can send paper, we can also set up cow tweets. We must go there for internship before going abroad A lap. In that year, an application called "Renren keyword" appeared on Renren. It can generate keywords according to the user's recent state. The author is Liu Zhiyuan, a doctor from Tsinghua University. Then he found a paper on conll, and he fell into the dilemma of natural language processing. At that time, I thought that text sentiment analysis was amazing, so I applied for a project. I went to the laboratory with the topic to find a teacher to do this project. It was in the first self-study classHowever, I got very good results in the microblog sentiment analysis evaluation of the conference on language processing and Chinese computing (more than 50 teams participated, and we were the first in a task). This is my first achievement related to scientific research. In the first semester of my junior year, I got a chance to go to the National University of Singapore as an exchange student. This project is pure class, there is no scientific research content, but I think such a good opportunity is wasted. With a speculative attitude, I asked the lab teacher if there was a professor I knew in NUS who would recommend me to go to the lab to do odd jobs. Unexpectedly, the teacher arranged me in the next Lab of Prof. Tat Seng Chua every minute. At first, I thought I could make some achievements in such a good environment. Later, I found that it was reasonable to design the project of Ma Dan as a pure class In that semester, I took five courses and just did my homework, which made me stupid (well, I blame myself for always writing things that I didn't ask for). I didn't have time to concentrate on scientific research at all, so it became that I sat doing my homework in that laboratory every day Of course, if we can't do the work, we can still be social. Next to me in the lab is a fat doctor of Harbin Institute of technology, who is practicing in NUS and is also trying to lose weight. Therefore, we keep fit and run together every day, and our relationship becomes very strong. I call him brother. When my brother heard that I wanted to go to MsrA, he said that he had a classmate from Harbin Institute of Technology who worked as a doctor of joint training in MsrA. He could transfer my resume to me. It's turning to my hand nowIn. But the first interview, failed The problem is that I still have a lot of classes in the second semester of my junior year, so I can't guarantee to work at least four days a week. This time is December 2012, and I will go home happily for the new year I came back from school in March for two weeks. My feeling is: is this class still useful?! I contacted mentor and said that I could guarantee to work at least four days a week, and then interviewed again. Easy seconds out of a string processing problems and binary search, and chat about the details before doing emotional analysis, passed the interview. On April 9, 2013, he was officially employed and missed 80% of the junior classes. At the first group meeting, I introduced myself. I said I had been with Prof. Chua. As a result, the boss of the group said they were very familiar! Later, I told the teacher of Beihang laboratory that I was interning in MsrA group. He said that he was also familiar with the boss of our group! I found out that I was in a circle among three familiar people, and realized a small wish in two years! Why is it a coincidence? At the beginning, I didn't get a place in Singapore for bullshit reasons. I went to discuss with the leaders of the college for several days and gave me another place. If I didn't fight for this opportunity at that time, maybe the road behind would be different. Generally speaking, in the academic circle, connection is very important. To be fair, I have not made any satisfactory results before, but the recommendation between teachers and students is better than the scoreIt's more important. That's why I say, if you can't work, you can't be social! <! More than two years later, after reading this answer, I came to ask how to go to MsrA for internship and apply for overseas experience. There were at least a dozen younger brothers and sisters who asked me to recommend MsrA for internship. Some of them patiently answered questions and helped me. Some of them chatted for a while and I didn't reply. So write some questions about internship and applying for top schools in the United States. First ask and answer these questions, and then ask me: do I know about research? (how many papers have you read, have you followed a project completely, know popular technologies such as deep learning, but do you know why and what the popular principles are) do I know what MsrA does? (why do you want to go to MsrA for internship? What groups are there in MsrA? What projects do each group do? What papers have been issued recently? Who are the main researchers in each group? What background do they have? For example, who are the doctoral supervisors graduated from which school?) I amAre you clear about what I want to do and have relevant experience? (generally speaking, do you want to do IR or ml or CV or CG or NLP or network or distributed computing or There are several small directions under each major direction. If you want to do ml, do you want to do deep learning or optimization or what...) Does the direction I want to do match the advantages of MsrA? (if I'm doing social network analysis, I'd better go to Tsinghua to find Mr. Tang instead of Ms.) finally, have my abilities met the requirements of MsrA? (on the whole, MsrA interns are not particularly demanding, but they can still brush off 90% of the applicants. Do you have the confidence to enter that 10% from various aspects, including programming ability, scientific research ability, communication ability, implementation ability, planning ability, etc.) Well, if you have a clear understanding of the above five questions, I should be very happy to help you! Of course, you may not need my help at this point; ) I just joined Microsoft today (yes, you are right, the famous softblack (big fog) joined Microsoft the Internet speed is very fast, and the desktop performance is very strong (after all, it's about C + + you can apply for all kinds of equipment, I applied for SP4, and I expect to get free snacks and drinks tomorrow, fat house is very happy (x )In addition, I haven't experienced 2333333333 yet speaking, I'm going to wear red hat's open source T-shirt tomorrow (x (and then set the desktop to RMS (estimated to be Intern) The quickest dismissal record is = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = the next day ( (the office behind me seems to be a little Japanese sister, with vs 2017 enterprise edition available, it's so cool (I installed a VIM first ( I really replaced the wallpaper with RMS ( and then updated it ( I almost got some today GPLv3 (I wrote it myself before) has been pushed into repo under Microsoft's name (no every day on the verge of being fired. Before running, I did a talk of missionary LISP and then I watered a star of tomorrow ( cathartic, all the students upstairs, confirmed that they were all my people I often receive your wechat and microblog messages, asking what is the internship like at Microsoft Research AsiaHow to become a researcher like Dalao in this question, let's answer it today. If you can summarize the internship experience of Microsoft Asia Research Institute in one sentence, it is to fight side by side with the academic leaders in all fields of computer research in an open, equal, free and comfortable academic and working environment. Every intern here will have his own "mentor", and the tutor has made the "mentor" culture of the Institute in the past 20 years. Interns and menters can become friends who talk about everything, exchange skills and talk about life freely. Each menter will hand in hand and share their knowledge and experience. When you come to the Research Institute, you can feel two very important cultures in the Microsoft family: growing thinking, diversity and tolerance. Growth thinking can help interns turn the difficulties encountered in the project into opportunities for rapid growth. The aim of diversity and inclusiveness makes Microsoft Asia research always open to students from all over the world, and pays close attention to the development of female students in stem field. The free atmosphere of the 5th student TechFest of Microsoft Research Asia is also reflected in encouraging innovation. The annual internal innovation competition, Microsoft Hackathon, has been in full swing for many years. The competition is equally open to Microsoft employees all over the world, whether they are new interns, or the executive vice president of Microsoft, they can choose the topics they are interested in, freely form teams, brainstorm, submit solutions, and participate in the creative competition. Every year, Hackathon has excellent projects that really enter into Microsoft's products and become a part of everyone's daily work and life. In addition, Microsoft Asia Research Institute often has talk sharing meetings with academic and industry celebrities, which is the daily welfare of interns. Raj Reddy, winner of Turing prize, Qiu Chengtong, mathematician, Lorenzo alvisi, Professor of Cornell University As an intern in the Research Institute, I often have the opportunity to face with the celebrities and ask them to answer their questions. Interns and mathematician Qiu Chengtong face to face The Research Institute will also specially grant scholarships to interns! In September every year, Microsoft Asia Research Institute will select 15 excellent intern partners and award them the "Microsoft Asia Research Institute alumni scholarship"; Dr. Shen Xiangyang, the global executive vice president of Microsoft, once encouraged everyone: "young people should dare to speak and predict, just in case they are right!" As a multinational company with humanistic care, Microsoft of course wants to make employees of all countries have a good time. Therefore, there are not only staff restaurants catering to the world's delicious food, but also Beijing courtyard with the flavor of Beijing's old cannon, Cantonese restaurant with the gentle flavor of Jiangnan, western restaurant preferred by meat lovers, Italian restaurant offering pasta and healthy salad, Southeast Asian food, Mexican food and more exotic dishes No, let's goPoison. If you are hungry after moving bricks, there are snacks, coffee and happy water in the tea room on each floor, which will give you unlimited happiness. In order to help interns reduce weight = height tragedy, today special sugar free happy water more delicious, poke here to see the full video! MsrA on the tip of the tongue: take you to unlock Microsoft canteen the students of Microsoft Asia Research Institute are all work hard, play In addition to the weekly badminton club and basketball club, they can also follow the MsrA climbing team to climb rocks. There are also the board game club with a long history and the legend of principal intern, as well as the newly opened Texas Hold'em division. And a little bit of milk tea group, late night departure (?) Car sharing group, hand in hand failed (x) friends group and so on Meet all the needs of internship life. In addition to eating and having fun, the most important thing in the research institute is the harvest brought by growth. Let's take a look at the growth experience of our friends during the internship: Lin Zichuan, a research intern in the machine learning group, is both a "table tennis player" and a "paper God". He frankly said that the teachers of the research institute have given him a lot of help in scientific research and learning: "my teachers are also my life mentors, and will have a very in-depth discussion with us at the group meeting And will give a lot of valuable guidance. " SocietyPei Rui @ peipeipei, a research intern of the computing group, has completed the "crossover" from communication to computer science in the Research Institute: "at present, the development trend of communication is quantitative calculation, and the requirements for technology are also higher and higher. It is difficult to obtain high-quality data sets just staying in the communication laboratory. MsrA can not only provide good data, but also let me access to more technical resources and get growth. " Liu Peiyun, project manager Intern of IEG (Innovation Engineering Group), said: "with the help of the team and tutor, I gradually learned how to independently communicate with Microsoft partners about the problems encountered in the project, promote the development of the project, how to calmly and efficiently communicate with colleagues, and guide everyone to complete the task together according to the set goals." Wang Na, an intern of Microsoft Xiaoying team, came from the "cross-border" of paleontology major: "at the beginning, I didn't dare to express my own opinions. Seeing this, my tutor always asked me for my opinions and encouraged me to think independently. Gradually, I became more confident and my ideas broadened a lot. When I studied paleontology in school, my tutor often encouraged me I explore the common points between disciplines, and look for opportunities for further cultivation in the computer field with my own professional advantages. " Yi Yuanyuan, an intern of the public relations group, worked as an enterprise communication business at Microsoft: "at the beginning, my friends and I were eager to plan the enterprise publicity video, but because we didn't consider it well, we took many detours. My mentor not only taught us a lot of professional skills, but also patiently encouraged us to complete the project through growth thinking. Looking back on this process, I grew up a lot. As a joint training intern who has been practicing in MsrA for nearly six years, the PhD who just checked out last week came to give me a strong answer ~ I had two internships in MsrA, the first time was when I was a senior, from the summer vacation of 2012 to 2013, during which time I decided to stay in the group and study for a doctor of joint training, so I went back to MsrA in 13 years After finishing all the postgraduate courses, I came back from the summer vacation of 2014 to start my second internship in the joint training stage, and started my five-year doctoral journey in MsrA. (checkout was also Tucao by mentor, you have already defeated many regular employees in MSRA during the internship.) the first experience of internship is make complaints about the top scientific research environment. My two internships were in MSRA network graphics group spent. In the direction of graphics, MsrA can be said to be one of the strongest places in China. At present, several strong groups of graphics / interaction design in domestic universities (such as Zhou Kun of Zhejiang University, Hu Shimin and Xu Yingqing of Tsinghua University, Liu Ligang of China University of science and technology, Chen Baoquan of Peking University / Shanda, Wang Wenping of Hong Kong University, etc.) are closely related to MsrA Even in the world, MsrA is a top-level research team. I remember the year when I first came here, just in time for MsrA to make history: in that year, MsrA published 10 papers on siggraph (excluding Asia), accounting for almost one tenth of the total number of admissions. Later, although not so crazy, but every year the basic siggraph + siggraph Asia is also stable at 4-5, it should be said that it is also very powerful. In such an environment, whether it's the mentor or the intern in the group, they will set high requirements for themselves, that is, to do sig level work. Mentors have very strict requirements on the innovation and practicability of scientific research idea, and they will polish it carefully through continuous discussion; when discussing in the group, fierce academic disputes between mentor and interns, or even between mentor and mentor, are very common; so that once my mentor and I were addicted to a point of viewThe discussion, accidentally disturbed the students in the vicinity, and make complaints about it. , of course, such a goal decided that the road of scientific research was very challenging; I also had some detours in the middle and encountered some difficulties; fortunately, under the guidance of the help of the big fellow of the researchers and the great spirits of the same group, I finally made some self felt efforts. Quite interesting work ~ it may be too long for this part of the content to be carried out here. When you have a chance later, just open a post as a memoir ~ in the middle of the night before siggraph, do the final demo In video ~ in addition to the top scientific research environment and serious and responsible mentor, in MsrA, you can also experience how happy it is to practice and play with the best and interesting group of peers in the world. In fact, the atmosphere of the whole institute is very similar to that of the school. Interns will spontaneously organize some clubs, such as badminton, basketball, board games / Depu, rock climbing, etc., and MsrA will have special funding support. Booking venues / buying board games, etc. can be reimbursed, so I'm very happy. So I run to play board games with you every Wednesday and have a chat, which has become a part of my internship life. It is also highly recommended that if you come to practice, you can try your best to communicate with the partners of the Research Institute, which can not only add a lot of fun to the internship life, but also a great opportunity to communicate with other students in different directions. I met all kinds of powerful and interesting partners in the Research Institute: you just openedSome of them got married and bought a house in Beijing while they were at the top meeting of NLP; some of them sang well and heard that they were called "MsrA Lin Junjie"; some of them graduated with 18 papers, some of them were outstanding students of Tsinghua Academy of fine arts, some of them were Zhihu Da V of communication major, and so on. There's nothing more enjoyable than having fun and discussing problems with people in these different fields. In fact, many possible opportunities for cross group cooperation also arise in this way. The largest group photo of the board game club ~ (if you can guess who said above, you can send me a private letter and I'll send you a red envelope ~) (and extra gossip: MsrA has the property of matchmaking agency to some extent ~ during my internship, I witnessed about 7 or 8 pairs of friends who have feelings and get married during the internship In a word, MsrA is a great place for internship experience. There are top scientific research environment, reliable mentor and excellent peers. I miss the days when I worked hard for siggraph until dawn, and the friends who played board games and had fun every Monday ~ P.S. recently, I was lazy after checkout. Ha ha ~ I'll come back to update some interesting details of my internship experience when I have time ~ from 201809 to 201906, I spent my senior year in MsrA, and came to Beijing with my suitcase after my 20th birthday at home Beijing. I made a big turn because I made a mistake at the subway entranceJust to the hotel, far away to see the hotel mottled external wall, I slightly a Leng. After checking in, the boss took me to the small room in the corner of the first floor: "young man, if you have something to call me!" Then I went back to the front desk. I look around, 15 square meters room put two one meter two single bed is also slightly hasty, decoration with the style of the Han court in 2000, outside the window is a brick wall, the wall above exposed a square foot sky, always feel cheated to a pyramid selling dens. If the boss hadn't charged me 100 yuan as a deposit when I registered, I might have run through the window. The next day, I went to Danling street to check in with my classmate L, who spent the next nine months together day and night. When I heard that sister HR called my name, I was relieved. It's not MLM. It's good. After going through the formalities, teacher B sent me a message telling me that I was not in Beijing now, so I asked teacher C to work with him. I went to see teacher C. he told me that there was a new project, just the two of us. At that time, I thought that when it was over, we would do nothing. When the project collapsed, the company would let me lose money, and I could not afford to lose money even if I sold it. It was a big company, and I really had a big heart. Then C teacher about the work content, I listen to half understand, and then asked me: XXX you can, no, that XXX understand, don't understand, that you will what, I will XXX, oh ~ but it has nothing to do with what we do. I can see that teacher C's head is big? He doesn't know how I got in, but the problem is that I don't know. The conversation ended happily, teacher C saidIf you have nothing to do, you can't learn it now. You should get familiar with these things first, and then we'll talk about them. Looking back, not only did the bosses give me high-level guidance and enough time and patience at the beginning, but also I asked stupid questions, read paper and discussed the plan. B teachers and C teachers will be exaggerated by changing their ways. If the code is written rotten, they will praise paper for reading fast. Idea is too simple to exaggerate the effect. But the technology involved can not be compromised. They have very high level of posture and keen insight. They can always point out the important questions that I have never thought of, and every time I say it, I am once again old. Freedom leads to efficiency: I started a long process of familiarity after I started my career. At that time, as a typical three no undergraduate (no school brand, no grades, no brain), I always felt that the road would not be so smooth. But thanks to the relaxed atmosphere of MsrA, you can arrange your time at will. As a jet lag player, I go to the company at 11 a.m. every day, have a cup of coffee, have lunch, take a nap, and basically start working at 2 p.m. until about 10 p.m. When I was at school, I usually got up at 7:30 in order to have 8:00 a.m. class, and then I was in a coma all day. I strongly don't recommend staying up late, but if you have such different living habits, you can arrange your own time freely here (I arrived at the station at 11 o'clock once and found that I was the first one from that block). You can even cross out the boss's working hours as I do. Here you areYou can arrange your working hours freely (communicate with the boss well, of course) and work at the time that suits you best (self motivated, of course). Open, equal, keep communication: there are countless meeting rooms, discussion rooms, rest rooms in MsrA building, and they are often occupied. So you can often see people in twos and threes holding computers to discuss problems in the tea room and rest area on each floor. The importance of communication has been emphasized here. On the wall of the station, even on the wall of the corridor, 80% of the places you can see can pick up the whiteboard pen to write and draw directly. When you encounter unexpected problems / complex results that need to be discussed and displayed at work, you usually send a message to teacher C, and then pick up your notebook and mug to meet in the tea room. I often see and hear when I pass by some blocks. Some interns will argue with their boss and quarrel with each other. They will blush and spit, but they will go downstairs to eat. In fact, this is also the premise of truly meaningful communication: openness and equality are the sparks of different voices. Top left: paper sharing meeting of xxxx2019; top right: daily work of working station; middle: daily work of meeting room Working with students from different backgrounds: in this process, students from the same block have gradually become familiar with each other. Our background is as followsThose two schools are from our university, from senior PhD students who are about to graduate to undergraduates like me. Their work content basically covers all groups of MsrA. This kind of experience is different from the school. My classmates in the school are also excellent, but we are in a school, taking the same courses and taking the same exams, which leads to serious homogenization. Before I went to MsrA, I always thought diversity was a bluff word, but in this environment, I found diversity matters. During the tea break, we put fruit in our mouths and talked about current affairs. When you eat, talk around a big table to find out which dish to order next time you go to the second floor. Before leaving work in the evening, I turn the stool, drink the coke left in the tea room, hold a face-to-face round table meeting, talk about my problems in work, spray the garbage paper I read today, and discuss an unfamiliar job. (you can also ask senior brother for love experience on the way to work) no matter what you talk about, everyone can get feedback from different perspectives. Chatting with people with the same background can only broaden the boundary of personal knowledge. In MsrA, you can chat with smart people from different backgrounds. It's great. My roommate and I applied to change to a high-rise room, which was much brighter all of a sudden. The owner of the hotel is very nice. He can be found at the front desk 24 hours a day. Sometimes it rains and he can borrow an umbrella or something. The most important thing is that you don't have to pay for your own bicycle. Of course, you can choose to rent your own house without staying in a hotel. There is a subsidy equivalent to one air china switch per month. The company provides one refrigerator drink (e.g., hemp tea / soda water / Oriental leaves), n boxes of snacks (e.g., crispy shark / Oreo) and fruits (e.g., watermelon / orange / pitaya) twice a day. There are massage chairs in the rest area. You can press them freely. Canteen prices are normal, less than 20 can eat, the company brings four restaurants: Beijing food / Cantonese food / Western Restaurant / Buffet (35, burp). From time to time there will be activities, there will be rare snacks and drinks. In addition, MsrA has a variety of collective activities. Intern support group also has intern students. Their job is to organize various collective activities, such as intern clubs (board game club, Texas Hold'em card club, badminton / basketball club, etc.). Community activities are not limited to interns at all. There are many FTEs (full-time employees) in all activities to fight for 300 rounds. In addition, there are "girls' day of computer science" (limited to girls, but also men, such as I make up for the number), "MsrA graduation ceremony" (limited to graduation interns), "MsrA Music Festival" (mixed eating and drinking) and Christmas, Halloween, etc., which are quite frequent In addition, large-scale activities will be organized, such as the annual "computing in the 21st century" conference and "MsrA family day" (Intern vs. boss's children's line-up day), and there will be high-level activitiesVenue + free meal + company transfer. And large-scale activities / push can get everyone's favorite items: T-shirts. I pushed my undergraduate classmate brother x, and successfully got one of the limited sanitary clothes (the quality still needs to be improved). After work, I had nothing to do with my roommate L. I went to Wal Mart to purchase. I studied which brand of pickled pepper and chicken feet was the best. I cooked mutton in the hotel room and switched. At the weekend, my roommates and their army from the University of science and technology took me out to surf, climb mountains, visit parks, and eat grilled fish from the people's Congress canteen. Sometimes when the pressure is high, I take the bus with brother x to the downstairs of his rented bachelor apartment, order a lamb chop pot, and brag in twos and twos. After work, teacher C, the little boss, will teach me how to play billiards / gym (if I have a car, I'm sure I'll take it with me). Every time I meet with teacher B, the big boss, I can learn a lot of life experience. MsrA family Fest 2019 in fact, I don't know how much time in MsrA has changed me. During the internship, my lovely girlfriend exchanged in Japan. After checking out in June, we went back to Changchun to prepare for graduation, and then we really met again. After sending all the students away, we took the high-speed train home together. She said that after I came back from MsrA, there were visible changes, in a good way. As the most junior interns, I sincerely thank the bosses for their life experience (and taking me to eat, drink and play) and their thought sparks (and taking me to eat and drink)Play). No.5 Danling street is a "fish and dragon mix". I am obviously the fish mixed in the dragon. From the point of view of a salted fish, the best thing here is to be all inclusive. The dragon can make a big move, and the fish can also make a little splash. Back at school, in October, when graduate students just started school, they received good news that [our work] was accepted by icde2020. In nine months, I have been able to do some minor work from the beginning to the end. The sentence "empower every person and every organization on the plant to achieve more" on the back of the work card is quite up to standard. I'll see you later.
